Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, June 17, 2013.

Wet and unsettled weather continued for parts of the East and South on Monday as a cold front dropped southeastward from southern Canada into the Midwest and Northeast. Rain showers and chances of thunderstorm activity accompanied this disturbance in parts of the Great Lakes into the Northeast. South of this disturbance areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms developed from the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast through the Central and Southern Plains. Impulses from from the West enhanced precipitation from parts of southeastern Kansas into northeastern Texas and Arkansas and also created the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms in parts of the Central and Southern High Plains. The Storm Prediction Center issued a slight risk of severe thunderstorm development through from the afternoon through tonight. While the main concerns with these storms are isolated areas of hail and damaging wind gusts, a few isolated tornadoes were also possible.

Out West, an upper level low located off the Pacific Northwest coast kicked up areas of showers in Washington as it neared the coast.

Nowcast as of 9:37 PM MDT on June 17, 2013
Isolated showers and possibly a short lived thunderstorm will persist across the Continental Divide eastward into the middle Rio Grande Valley and the central and south central mountains of New Mexico for the rest of the evening. Showers and any storms will generally push eastward at speeds of 15 to 20 mph. Precipitation amounts will range from a few sprinkles to a tenth of an inch. Abrupt and erratic wind gusts to 50 mph may accompany any showers or storms...leading to localized areas of blowing dust and reduced visibility below 3 miles. A few lightning strikes will also be possible. In addition...a gusty east wind is expected to develop through canyons in the Central Mountain chain and into the Rio Grande Valley before midnight. Gusts to around 35 mph will be most likely along the Interstate 25 corridor and east to the foothills of the Sandia and Manzano Mountains.
