Heat Advisory
Statement as of 11:04 AM CDT on July 28, 2015

... Heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening...

* temperature... lower 90s are expected across most of central
and southeast Illinois this afternoon... lingering through
about 7 PM.

* Heat index... as dew points rise into the mid to upper 70s...
this will create dangerous heat index values of 105 to 110
degrees this afternoon... with the highest values from about
Springfield west.

* Impacts... heat related illness can develop quickly in such
conditions... especially for people doing strenuous activities
outdoors.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of water... stay in an air-conditioned
room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and
neighbors.

Special Statement
Statement as of 2:44 PM CDT on July 28, 2015

... Funnel clouds sighted over portions of central Illinois...

Numerous reports of funnel clouds have been received this
afternoon over parts of McLean and DeWitt counties. The storms and
outflow boundary associated with these storms is moving southeast
through the area. Additional funnel clouds will be possible along
this outflow boundary this afternoon.

Atmospheric conditions exist today across parts of central Illinois
that favor the formation of weak circulations on a pre-existing
boundary. Some of these circulations are occurring underneath
developing showers and thunderstorms... where a funnel cloud may
develop. Once the rain begins... The Funnel cloud dissipates.

Low hanging clouds can also appear to dip up and down at times... but
they will not show signs of any rapid rotation. An actual funnel
cloud will exhibit spinning in a counter-clockwise direction.

In rare instances these funnels may briefly touchdown. Stay alert
and be prepared to move to a safe shelter if a funnel cloud approaches
the ground.
