Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 8:50 AM MDT on May 24, 2015

The National Weather Service in Rapid City has issued a

* Flood Warning for small streams in...
south Central Pennington County in west central South Dakota...
northeastern Custer County in southwestern South Dakota...

* until 845 PM MDT Monday

* at 844 am MDT... automated rain gauges indicated that 1 to 2 inches
of rain has fallen over the the central Black Hills. The heavy
rain will cause flooding along small streams.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Hermosa... Keystone... Hayward... Custer State Park.

High water is moving down Battle Creek between Hill City and
Keystone... grizzly Bear Creek upstream of Keystone... and Grace
Coolidge creek.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Never drive into areas where the water covers the Road. Just one
foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the
Road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice... turn
around... dont drown.

Areal Flood Watch
Statement as of 3:33 AM MDT on May 24, 2015

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of South Dakota and northeast Wyoming... including the
following areas... in South Dakota... central Black Hills...
Custer co plains... Fall River... Hermosa foot hills... northern
Black Hills... northern foot hills... Pennington co plains...
Rapid City... Shannon... southern Black Hills... southern foot
hills... southern Meade co plains and Sturgis/Piedmont foot
hills. In northeast Wyoming... southern Campbell and Wyoming
Black Hills.

* Through Monday afternoon

* storm total rainfall amounts of around one inch are expected at
many locations... especially today. Some areas along the eastern
slopes of the Black Hills... and over far southern Campbell
County in northeastern Wyoming... could receive up to 2 inches
of rain by Monday afternoon.

* Soils are saturated and creeks and streams in many locations
are still running high from the recent storms... especially along
the eastern slopes of the Black Hills and over southwestern
South Dakota. The additional rainfall may cause more flooding
for those areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means that flooding is possible along rivers and
creeks in the watch area... but is not imminent. If you are in the
watch area... take time to move livestock... equipment... and other
property from low lying areas before flooding occurs. Monitor
NOAA Weather Radio and local media for updated forecasts and be
ready to quickly move to higher ground if rising water levels are
observed or a warning is issued.
