Air Quality Alert, Beach Hazard Statement
Statement as of 4:47 AM CDT on July 07, 2015

... Special air quality notice for parts of Wisconsin...

The Wisconsin department of natural resources has issued a
special air quality notice for parts of Wisconsin.

The wildfire smoke that has been over Wisconsin for several days
is now being brought down to the surface.

A cold front has passed through the state during the late night
hours of Monday into Tuesday morning. Typically... the air behind
a cold front is descending through the atmosphere. This
descending motion is what is bringing the wildfire smoke to ground
level.

The pm2.5 air quality has reached the unhealthy level for
sensitive groups (orange category) at several monitoring sites
across northern and west-central Wisconsin. The sensitive groups
category includes children... elderly people... individuals with
respiratory and cardiac problems... or anyone engaged in strenuous
outdoor activities for a prolonged period of time.

The width and density of the smoke plume will vary at any given
location. The forecast is for the smoke to move southeastward
across the state this morning.

For current information on air quality readings please call
the daily air hotline at 1-866-dailyair... 1-866-324-5924.

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 8 am CDT this morning
through this evening...

The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a
beach hazards statement for dangerous swimming conditions... which
is in effect from 8 am CDT this morning through this evening.

* High wave action... large waves and dangerous currents are
expected. Conditions are life threatening.

* Strong structural currents... expected.

* Strong longshore currents... expected.

* Rip currents... possible.

* Location... beaches in Ozaukee... Milwaukee... Racine and Kenosha
counties with particularly dangerous conditions include...

     Upper Lake park beach in Port Washington...
     Harrington State Park beaches...
     McKinley beach in Milwaukee...
     Grant Park beach in Milwaukee...
     Shoop Park beach in Racine...
     North Park beach in Racine...
     Simmons Island beach in Kenosha.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Structural currents form along piers where longshore currents and
wave action flow into the structure. Structural currents can
sweep you out into deeper water along the pier structure.

A longshore current is a lake current that moves parallel to
shore. Longshore currents can be strong enough to prevent
swimmers from being able to keep their feet on the bottom...
making it difficult to return to shore.
