Coastal Hazard Statement
Statement as of 9:02 AM EDT on May 23, 2015

... High rip current risk remains in effect from 8 PM EDT this
evening through Tuesday afternoon...

* timing... the rip current risk along the Atlantic beaches will
increase to moderate today then to high by this evening. The
high risk will continue Sunday... Memorial Day and into Tuesday.

* Impacts... dangerous and life threatening rip currents will be
developing along the Atlantic beaches this Memorial Day weekend.
High pressure moving off the eastern Seaboard will generate
strong onshore winds... which will lead to rough surf and life
threatening rip currents. The risk of rip currents will be
greatest Sunday and Memorial Day.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
