Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 19, 2013.

Severe thunderstorm activity will persist for the Plains on Sunday as a broad low pressure system continues trekking through the region. The system will move from the Northern Plains and into the Great Lakes, creating two frontal boundaries. The warm front associated with this system will extend eastward over the Great Lakes and into the Northeast, kicking up scattered showers and thunderstorms into Sunday night. At the same time, a cold front extends southward from this system which will move off the Central Rockies and into the Central and Southern Plains. Counter-clockwise flow around this broad system will pull moisture and energy into the Plains from the Gulf of Mexico. This will support moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms in between these two fronts. This system has a history of severe thunderstorm development across the Northern and Central Plains, thus, there is a moderate risk of severe thunderstorm development with large hail, damaging winds, and multiple tornadoes. These severe thunderstorms will most likely develop across central and eastern Oklahoma, through eastern Kansas, and into western Missouri. A slight risk of severe storm development remains in effect from northern Texas, through southern Minnesota and Wisconsin on Sunday. At the same time, the back side of this system will continue spreading moisture over the Intermountain West and Rockies. This will trigger more showers with isolated thunderstorms over the region through Sunday evening.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure slowly moves over the East Coast and maintains shower and thunderstorm activity for the Mid-Atlantic states through the Northeast.

... A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 1045 am EDT for west
central Jackson... northeastern Gwinnett... southwestern Forsyth and
northwestern Barrow counties...

At 858 am EDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to
indicate a series of thunderstorms producing flash flooding over the
warned area.

Locations in the warning include but are not limited to Rest Haven
and Buford. Rainfall totals have reached three to five inches in
some of the area and this combined with the rain currently falling
has resulted in many Road closures and a few downed trees.
Additional rainfall is expected later this morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... as well as highways and underpasses.
Additionally... country roads and farmlands along the banks of
creeks... streams and other low lying areas are subject to flooding.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway... the water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a
* Flood Warning for
the Big Creek near Alpharetta.
* Until Tuesday morning.
* At 6 am Sunday the stage was 5.9 feet... and rising.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 7.0 feet.
* Forecast to rise above flood stage this morning and continue to
rise to near 9.9 feet by this evening. The river will fall below
flood stage by Tuesday morning.
* At 6.0 feet... bankfull conditions are reached along the creek
between Cumming in Forsyth County... to Alpharetta and Roswell in
north Fulton County. Some low lying spots along the Big Creek
Greenway will begin to flood with a few inches of water upstream
and downstream from the gage on Kimball bridge Road. Water will
begin to enter low portions of the YMCA campground off Preston
Ridge Road.
* This crest compares to a previous crest of 5.2 feet on Sep 4 1986.

the Big Creek near Cumming.
* Until further notice.
* At 6 am Sunday the stage was 6.6 feet... and rising.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 6.0 feet.
* At 7.0 feet... minor flooding continues to expand into the natural
flood plain of the creek upstream and downstream from the gage at
Atlanta Highway or Georgia Highway 9. Large portions of the
sidewalk and boardwalk of the Big Creek Greenway will be flooded.
The areas under the Georgia 400 Highway and McFarland Road will be
covered with around two feet of water. A portion of the sidewalk
under majors Road will be covered with around 3 feet of water.

* The river is cresting and will fall below flood stage by this
afternoon.
* At 14.0 feet... moderate flooding begins in northwest Forsyth
County. Old federal Road begins to flood and Nicholson Road is
closed off to residents. Minor flooding continues in south Dawson
County.
* This crest compares to a previous crest of 14.6 feet on Sep 21 2009.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a

* Flood Watch for portions of central Georgia... east central
Georgia... north central Georgia... northeast Georgia...
northwest Georgia and west central Georgia.

* Through this evening

* National Weather Service radar indicates that two to four inches
of rain... with locally higher amounts... has fallen across
portions of north and central Georgia this morning. Additional
amounts of one to two inches with locally higher amounts are
possible. The heavy rainfall axis will shift to the southwest
across the Metro Atlanta area during the mid to late morning.

* Flooding of the larger creeks and rivers is possible with
additional rainfall.

* Localized flash flooding will be possible if the heavy rain
repeatedly moves over the same area. Also... storm drains...
ditches... and low lying areas may become quickly clogged with
debris and cause extensive street flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor
