Areal Flood Warning
Statement as of 10:32 AM EST on March 05, 2015

... A Flood Warning for rain and snow melt remains in effect until
545 PM EST Thursday for Tazewell... Summers... Greenbrier... Mercer and
Monroe counties...

At 1014 am EST... stream gages in the warned area continue to
indicate very high water levels... although most stages are now
falling. Widespread flooding continues to be reported on numerous
streams and creeks mainly in Tazewell and Mercer counties but also
in parts of the Greenbrier valley.

Rainfall across the area Wednesday into this morning ranged from one
/1.00/ to one and a half /1.50/ inches. This rainfall... combined
with existing snowmelt... to produce widespread flooding. The rain
has now changed to frozen precipitation across most of the warned
area which will reduce any additional runoff during the remainder of
the day.

There are numerous small streams and creeks that are either in
flood... or experiencing high water levels. Here are some of the
larger ones...

On the Clinch River in Tazewell County... minor flooding continues
with the river gage near Richlands at 11.1 feet and falling. Flood
stage is 10 feet. The river will continue to fall to below flood
stage by later today.

On the Bluestone river in Mercer County... the river continues to
run very high... with moderate flooding occurring between Spanishburg
and Pipestem. The latest gage reading for the river at Spanishburg
was 16.8 feet at 10 am... which is a drop from the 17.1 foot crest
which occurred earlier this morning. Moderate flood stage is 15 feet
and major flood stage is 18 feet. Falling stages are likely along
the entire river today but it will remain very high and dangerous.
Until the river recedes later today... extensive lowland flooding
will continue along much of the river and significant portions of
Route 19 will likely remain closed near Spanishburg.

Indian Creek near Red Sulphur Springs in Monroe County has dropped
below moderate flood stage. At 900 am... the stream level was around
10.0 feet and falling rapidly. Flood stage is 8 feet. Lowland
flooding is likely and some roads may be affected including County
Road 23.

The Meadow river in western Greenbrier County is also running very
high per the newly established stream gage near Hines. The stage was
10.8 feet at 815 am and still rising.

In addition to the flood threat... watch out for mudslides. The
ground is so moist that rocks... mud and debris may fall from
hillsides resulting in blocked roads.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... as well as farm and country roads. Do not
attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes.

When it is safe to do so... please send your reports of flooding...
including mudslides or Road closures... to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free at 1... 8 6 6... 2 1 5... 4 3 2 4. Reports
and pictures can also be shared on the National Weather Service
Blacksburg facebook Page and on twitter.
