George Saratoga region... Mid Hudson
valley... Taconics... Berkshires and Litchfield Hills.

dangerously low wind chill values. Monitor the latest forecasts
and warnings for updates on this situation.

Special Statement
Issued: 3:12 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Gusty winds and below zero wind chills possible through early
evening across the Mohawk Valley... greater capital
region... extreme southern Adirondacks... northern and central
Taconics and Berkshires...

Northwest winds will combine with cold temperatures to create
bitterly cold wind chills through the early evening hours. Wind
gusts will occasionally reach 30 to 45 mph... with the highest
gusts down the immediate Mohawk River valley into the greater
capital region. Combined with temperatures in the teens... wind
chill values will range from the single digits to 10 degrees below
zero.

If outdoors this afternoon and early evening... be sure to wear
proper protective winter clothing as frostbite and hypothermia
may be possible in a relatively short period of time. Gusty winds
may also result in isolated power outages as well.

... Potentially life threatening situation with extreme cold this
weekend...

* temperatures this weekend will fall into the single digits and
below zero across all of eastern New York and western New
England. Valley locations will average between 5 and 10 degrees
for high temperatures while higher terrain will remain at or
below zero. Overnight lows will drop below zero.

* Northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph will result in wind chill values
between 20 and 45 degrees below zero... with the coldest values
across the higher terrain. These values will result in frostbite
to occur in 10 minutes or less on exposed skin. Residents are
highly encouraged to take proper precautions with limiting
exposed skin.

* If you have not done so already... be sure to cover exposed pipes
to reduce the threat of frozen pipes or pipe bursts.

* Ensure your furnaces are in working order. Follow manufactures
instructions or utilize a qualified technician to ensure proper
and safe operation of your furnace.

* Never venture outdoors without wearing gloves... a hat and
several layers of clothing.

* Run water at a trickle and keep Cabinet doors open to prevent
pipes from freezing.

* Never use a stove or oven to heat your home or use an open flame
to melt frozen pipes. Many house fires result from these
practices.

* Never use a generator near or inside your home. Carbon monoxide
poisoning is deadly. Check or install Carbon monoxide
detectors.

* Check tire pressure and your car battery. Be sure your car has
a winter safety kit that includes a blanket... warm clothes and
gloves in case your car breaks down or becomes stranded.

* Take extra steps to keep your pets warm and know their limits to
cold.
