Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

After an active severe weather pattern during the beginning of the week, cooler and relatively calmer weather conditions will return to much of the Central U.S. on Wednesday as the trough of low pressure impacting the region moves to the East. As the trough progresses, an associated low pressure system will reorganize near southern Lake Michigan and will continue northeastward across Michigan toward the Lower Great Lakes through Wednesday evening. Expect rain showers to continue across the Upper Midwest into areas of the inland Northeast throughout this transition. Meanwhile, the system's associated cold front will trail southwestward from the low across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys through the Lower Mississippi Valley and into the Southern Plains. Favorable energy and environmental conditions ahead of the cold front combined with ample moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will set the stage for shower and thunderstorm activity through the day. Areas just east of the advancing cold front will experience the heaviest amounts of precipitation, with areas of flooding and flash flooding possible in parts of eastern Texas and Louisiana. As the cold front continues eastward, areas of the Lower Great Lakes into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys are at slight risk of severe thunderstorm development through the evening. Severe storms in these regions may become capable of producing damaging wind gusts, marginally severe hail, and even a few tornadoes during the evening hours.

Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible along the East Coast and in the Florida Peninsula. Out West, a cold trough of low pressure will become anchored over the Pacific Northwest, bringing cool, below normal temperatures to the Pacific Northwest and California, as well as scattered precipitation to the Northwest.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:00 PM EDT on May 22, 2013

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
northern Connecticut
western and central Massachusetts
southern New Hampshire
eastern New York
northeastern Pennsylvania
Vermont

* effective this Wednesday afternoon and evening from 100 PM
until 1000 PM EDT.

* Primary threats include...
several damaging wind gusts to 70 mph possible
several large hail events to 1.5 inches in diameter possible

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 90
statute miles east and west of a line from 40 miles north of
Burlington Vermont to 20 miles south southwest of Monticello New
York. For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated
watch outline update (wous64 kwns wou0).

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.

Discussion... forcing associated with a weak upper impulse appears to
be contributing to ongoing vigorous storm development now moving
into/spreading across the Catskill region of New York. This
activity is expected to develop eastward across the Hudson Valley
into New England this afternoon... with additional storms developing
in the warming and destabilizing boundary layer to the west... before
spreading eastward. Moderately strong and sheared deep layer
westerly flow is sufficient for supercell structures in the presence
of weak to moderate cape... which will enhance the risk for severe
hail and strong surface gusts.

Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 1.5 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 60
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm
motion vector 27030.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:31 PM EDT on May 22, 2013

... Severe thunderstorms possible through this evening in parts of
southern New England...

Thunderstorms have begun to develop across eastern New York early
this afternoon... and will head into western New England between 3
PM and 5 PM.

Some of the thunderstorms may be severe... especially in northern
Connecticut... western and central Massachusetts... and southwest
New Hampshire where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect
until 10 PM.

Thunderstorms are also possible farther south and east... into the
Providence and Boston areas... but the potential for severe
weather is more limited.

In addition... minor flooding is possible across western Massachusetts
and southwest New Hampshire... where over one inch of rain fell
yesterday.

Those with outdoor plans this afternoon and evening should have a
safe place to go if thunderstorms approach... such as a vehicle or
indoors. If you can hear thunder... you are close enough to be
struck by lightning.

Stay tuned to NOAA all hazards radio... or your local media for
updated information throughout the day.
