Tropical Weather: Tropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, May 28, 2012.

Tropical Storm Beryl will move slowly northwestward and then turn northward over portions of northeastern Florida and southeastern Georgia

on Monday and Monday night. Strong wind and rain will continue to effect these areas up through North Carolina as Beryl moves inland, while dangerous surf conditions, including rip currents, remain a concern along the coastal areas from northeastern Florida to North Carolina. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected from northern Florida through southeastern North Carolina from this system. For more information on Beryl, please visit http://www.wunderground.com/tropical.

Meanwhile, to the north, the deep storm in the Dakotas will lift northeastward across the Upper Mississippi Valley with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The cold front associated with this system will extend southwestward from the low through the Southern Plains. Showers and thunderstorms will form ahead of the front from the Central and Southern Plains into the Upper Great Lakes. There is a slight risk of severe storms from Wisconsin and Michigan southwestward across portions of eastern Iowa, northern Indiana, Illinois, and northeastern Missouri. While the main concerns with storms in these areas are damaging wind gusts and large hail, a few tornadoes may also become possible. To the south, areas of south-central Oklahoma into northwestern Texas may experience hail and damaging wind gusts. To the east of this system, an associated warm front will extend through the Northeast and will become nearly stationary. Moisture overrunning this front will aid in producing showers and thunderstorms from areas of the Lower Great Lakes into the Northeast. There is a slight risk of severe storms from upstate New York into Vermont and western Massachusetts with isolated hail events.

In the west, showers will continue across parts of the Northern Intermountain West and Northern Rockies, while a cold front brings cool, cloudy and chances of showers to the Pacific Northwest.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:00 am EDT on May 28, 2012

... National hurricane preparedness week continues...

Hurricanes and other tropical systems... particularly strong tropical
storms... can have numerous threats associated with them. These include
storm surge... strong winds... flooding rainfall... tornadoes... rip
currents... high surf and beach erosion. We will begin by discussing
storm surge and strong winds.

... Storm surge...
storm surge is a large dome of water... often 50 to 100 miles wide...
that pushes inland mostly to the right of where the hurricane crosses
the coast. The surge of high water... in addition to dangerous battering
waves... can produce massive destruction near the immediate coast.
However... surge can also push well inland... especially in low-lying
areas near waterways such as rivers and inlets. Normally the larger in
size and stronger the storm and the shallower the water near the coast
the greater the surge will be. Along the immediate coast... storm surge
constitutes the greatest threat to life and property.

... Strong winds...
hurricane force winds... 74 miles per hour or greater... can destroy poorly
constructed buildings and Mobile homes. Debris... such as signs...
roofing material and small items left outside become flying missiles
in hurricanes. Winds can often stay above hurricane strength well away
from the immediate coast. Hurricane Hugo in 1989 remained a hurricane as
it moved inland into western North Carolina and battered the Charlotte
area with gusts over 75 miles per hour damaging many structures and
causing numerous downed trees and power lines.
