At 7 am...National Weather Service radars continued to indicate showers and thunderstorms affecting most of eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. The strongest storms were located across far eastern Carroll County in northwest Arkansas. Movement was to the south southeast at 25 miles an hour. Through 8 am...widely scattered showers and thunderstorms will affect all of eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. Most areas will only see a few sprinkles through 8 am...however the area from Blue Eye to Osage in Carroll County could see intense rainfall...winds to 40 miles an hour...and dangerous cloud to ground lightning.

Statement as of 3:25 AM CDT on July 12, 2009 ... Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT Tuesday... For the following counties... In Arkansas... Crawford... Franklin and Sebastian. In Oklahoma... Pushmataha... Choctaw... Osage... Washington... Nowata... Craig... Ottawa... Pawnee... Tulsa... Rogers... Mayes... Delaware... creek... Okfuskee... Okmulgee... Wagoner... Cherokee... Adair... Muskogee... McIntosh... Sequoyah... Pittsburg... Haskell... Latimer and Le Flore. Hot and humid weather will continue across eastern Oklahoma and portions of west central Arkansas for the next several days as high pressure aloft builds over the area. Afternoon heat index values are expected to be in the 105 to 110 degree range with overnight lows ranging from the mid 70s to lower 80s. Precautionary/preparedness actions... An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and neighbors. Make sure pets and animals have plenty of water and a shady place to escape direct sunshine.
