Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

continues for
the Calcasieu River near Glenmora.
* Until Wednesday evening... or until the warning is cancelled.
* At 8:30 am Saturday the stage was 13.6 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 12.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will continue to fall to below flood stage by
Wednesday early afternoon.
* Impact... at 12.0 feet... when the river is falling and the gauge
reading is forecast to be near 12 feet... only minor flooding of
forested areas near the river will occur.

... Hard freeze warning now in effect from midnight tonight to
9 am CST Sunday...

* temperature... around freezing by midnight falling to the mid
20s by sunrise Sunday morning... then above freezing by Sunday
mid-morning.

* Duration... below freezing for 6 to 9 hours and at or below 27
degrees for 2 to 3 hours.

* Impacts... harm or killing of sensitive and tender vegetation
that has started to Bud. Some exposed pipes may be susceptible
to freezing and should be protected. Pets should have warm
shelter or brought inside.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A hard freeze warning means temperatures in the mid 20s or colder
are imminent or highly likely. These conditions will kill crops
and other sensitive vegetation.

Be careful heating your home. Keep space heaters at least
36 inches away from anything that can burn. Turn it off anytime
you leave the room or go to bed.

To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water
pipes... pipes should be wrapped or drained.
