Tropical Storm Beryl will move slowly northwestward and then turn northward over portions of northeastern Florida and southeastern Georgia

on Monday and Monday night. Strong wind and rain will continue to effect these areas up through North Carolina as Beryl moves inland, while dangerous surf conditions, including rip currents, remain a concern along the coastal areas from northeastern Florida to North Carolina. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected from northern Florida through southeastern North Carolina from this system. Meanwhile, to the north, the deep storm in the Dakotas will lift northeastward across the Upper Mississippi Valley with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The cold front associated with this system will extend southwestward from the low through the Southern Plains. Showers and thunderstorms will form ahead of the front from the Central and Southern Plains into the Upper Great Lakes. There is a slight risk of severe storms from Wisconsin and Michigan southwestward across portions of eastern Iowa, northern Indiana, Illinois, and northeastern Missouri. While the main concerns with storms in these areas are damaging wind gusts and large hail, a few tornadoes may also become possible. To the south, areas of south-central Oklahoma into northwestern Texas may experience hail and damaging wind gusts. To the east of this system, an associated warm front will extend through the Northeast and will become nearly stationary. Moisture overrunning this front will aid in producing showers and thunderstorms from areas of the Lower Great Lakes into the Northeast. There is a slight risk of severe storms from upstate New York into Vermont and western Massachusetts with isolated hail events.

In the west, showers will continue across parts of the Northern Intermountain West and Northern Rockies, while a cold front brings cool, cloudy and chances of showers to the Pacific Northwest.

... Hurricane preparedness week continues today with a focus on storm
surge...

The greatest threat to life and property along the coast is due to
storm surge. Storm surge is produced by water being pushed toward
shore by the force of winds swirling around a hurricane. The maximum
storm surge is normally near and just to the right of the center of
a tropical cyclone. Storm surge should not be confused with storm
tide... which is defined as the water level rise from the combination
of storm surge and the astronomical tide. The destructive power of
storm surge can cause loss of life... destruction of buildings... and
Road and bridge damage along the coast. In addition... the rise in
water level can cause severe salt water flooding... particularly when
storm surge coincides with high tide... resulting in storm tides
reaching 15 feet or more in some cases.

No place near the ocean or at low elevation is safe from storm surge
during a major hurricane. Hurricane Donna in 1960... which destroyed
many buildings and vessels in the middle and Upper Keys... produced a
storm tide as high as 13.5 feet above mean sea level. Storm tides in
the middle and Upper Keys were generally 8 to 12 feet above mean sea
level. Destruction from storm tides in the middle and Upper Keys
ranged from major to almost complete.

With this threat in mind... heed evacuation orders and act without
hesitation. Go to the nearest possible evacuation destination...
whether it be the home of your closest friend or relative... or a
public shelter. Contact Monroe County emergency management to
Register or get information regarding anyone in your household who
may require special assistance in order to evacuate. Prepare your
home prior to evacuating by boarding up doors and windows... moving
all yard objects indoors... and turning off all utilities.

The Florida Keys National Weather Service will release tropical
cyclone information and important safety precautions in a hurricane
or tropical storm local statement... including the potential impact
of storm surge. This statement is issued at two or three hour
intervals during the entire period of a tropical cyclone threat. It
can be heard on NOAA Weather Radio... seen scrolling on the bottom of
the screen on the weather channel... or viewed on the internet at:
www.Weather.Gov/keywest.
