Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday, May 17, 2012.

Wet weather diminished over most of the East Coast on Thursday, with the exception of scattered storms over the Southeast. A low pressure system moved offshore of the Northeast and pulled a cold front offshore with it. However, the southern side of this frontal boundary lingered over the Southeast and produced scattered showers and thunderstorms over the Carolinas and Florida. Some of these storms turned severe with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hail. Rainfall totals surpassed 3 inches in parts of South Carolina, with the heaviest rain reported up to 3.36 inches of rain in Charleston, South Carolina. Ping pong size hail was reported in Clinton, South Carolina, while strong winds blew down multiple trees and power lines across South Carolina and Georgia.

Behind this system in the Plains, a low pressure system moved off the Rockies and into the Northern Plains. Flow around this system pulled warm and moist air northward from the Gulf of Mexico. This produced scattered showers and thunderstorms along a warm front that extended eastward and moved over the Upper Midwest and into the Great Lakes. Severe thunderstorm development has not yet been reported around this system.

Further west, a cold front trailed through the Northwestern corner of the nation and kicked up showers as it stretched from the Northern Rockies, over the Intermountain West, into northern California and the Great Basin. In the Southwest, however, high pressure created another hot and dry day, which increased fire danger across Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, southern Utah, and western Colorado.
