Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Freeze Warning, Lake Wind Advisory, Freeze Watch, Wind Chill Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:28 PM EST on February 11, 2012

... Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this
evening...
... Freeze warning remains in effect from 2 am to 9 am EST
Sunday...
... Freeze watch remains in effect from late Sunday night through
Monday morning...

* timing... gusty northwest winds into early this evening. Sub
freezing temperatures are expected tonight through early Sunday
morning. Another round of sub freezing temperatures is possible
Sunday night into early Monday morning.

* Winds... northwest winds 15 to 20 mph will prevail through this
afternoon... with gusts to 35 mph.

* Temperature... low temperatures tonight and Sunday night will be
in the upper 20s to near 30. Northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph will
create wind chills in the teens Sunday morning.

* Impacts... boaters should exercise caution today... as should
drivers of high profile vehicles. Freezing temperatures will
kill sensitive vegetation that is not protected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or
expected for at least 2 hours. Appropriate action should be
taken to ensure tender vegetation and outdoor pets have adequate
protection from the cold temperatures. Young children... the
elderly and the homeless are especially vulnerable to the cold.
Take measures to protect them.

A lake Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to
25 mph or gusts of 30 to 39 mph are expected. Small boats will be
especially prone to capsizing. Boaters in the advisory area
should avoid open water and stay close to shore in wind protected
inlets. High profile vehicles should use extra caution when
traveling as well.

A freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible for
at least 2 hours.

... Wind Chill Advisory in effect from 3 am to 9 am EST Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville has issued a Wind
Chill Advisory... which is in effect from 3 am to 9 am EST Sunday.

* Timing... late tonight into early Sunday morning.

* Winds... north 10 to 15 mph.

* Wind chill readings... teens to lower 20s.

* Impact... those sensitive to the cold or planning on being
outside should take precautions.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.
