The lavish Sunday brunch is consistently outstanding. Adjacent to Riverwalk Shopping Center, the hotel is directly across the street from Harrah's New Orleans Casino; the Riverfront streetcar stops out front. The health club is among the best in town, and the hotel has a resident golf pro and a four-hole putting green. Designed for large convention groups, this hotel is also a great choice for independent travelers. Pros:

2 Audubon Park
Audubon Park

New Orleans, LA 70118

Formerly the plantation of Etienne de Boré, the father of the granulated sugar industry in Louisiana, Audubon Park

is a large, lush stretch of green between St. Charles Avenue and Magazine Street, continuing across Magazine Street to the river. Designed by John Charles Olmsted, nephew of Frederick Law Olmsted (who laid out New York City's Central Park), it contains the world-class

Audubon Zoo

; a 1.7-mi track for running, walking, or biking; picnic and play areas; Audubon Park Golf Course; a tennis court; horse stables; and a river view. Calm lagoons wind through the park, harboring egrets, catfish, and other indigenous species. The park and zoo were named for the famous ornithologist and painter John James Audubon, who spent many years working in and around New Orleans. None of the original buildings from its former plantation days remain; in fact, none of the buildings that housed the 1884-85 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition have survived. The only reminder of the city's first World's Fair is Exposition Boulevard, the street address assigned to houses that front the park along the downtown side.

If time permits, you may want to venture beyond the zoo, cross the railroad tracks, and stroll along Riverview Drive,

a long stretch of land behind the zoo that is part of Audubon Park, on the levee overlooking the Mississippi River. This area is referred to as "The Fly" by locals, after a butterfly-shaped building that was torn down here some years ago, and it is a popular place for picnics and pickup sports. www.auduboninstitute.org. Admission: Free.

City Park

City Park, a 150-year-old, 1,500-acre expanse of moss-draped oaks and gentle lagoons 2 mi from the French Quarter, suffered mightily in Hurricane Katrina's winds and flooding. The storm felled or damaged more than 1,000 trees, destroyed an 18-hole golf course, ravaged vegetation, and forced the park to lay off 90% of its staff. Nevertheless, the park has been rebuilt with the help of hundreds of local and visiting volunteers and is again a great place to walk or jog, play tennis, feed the ducks, visit one of its attractions, or simply relax. Just beyond the main entrance at the end of Esplanade Avenue stands the New Orleans Museum of Art

and an adjacent sculpture garden; tucked elsewhere in the sprawling park are tennis courts, a sports stadium and running track, baseball diamonds and playgrounds, equestrian stable and golf course, along with miles of meandering walking paths and gentle lagoons rife with waterfowl. The park's art-deco benches, fountains, bridges, and ironwork are remnants of a 1930s Works Progress Administration refurbishment, and whimsical sculptures by renowned New Orleans artist Enrique Alferez dot the

New Orleans Botanical Garden

. The train garden here, operating on weekends only, is still a fun stop for the kids. Other children's favorites, Storyland and Carousel Gardens, are also open seasonally on weekends. Most attractions are clustered near the museum, but a stroll or picnic anywhere in the park is a wonderful way to relax. A popular drive-through Christmas holiday light display had to be scaled down after Katrina, but a walking tour and activities beginning annually after Thanksgiving pack in holiday revelers. Call ahead or check the park's Web site for revised hours and available activities. www.neworleanscitypark.com.
