Weather Summary

Tim Roche
Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, May 11, 2008.

An intense low pressure system continued to move across the nation on Sunday, bringing more thunderstorms and tornadoes to the East. By late afternoon on Sunday, the storm sat squarely above the Mid-West. Several twisters were reported on Sunday, with one in Georgia causing complete structural damage to a building. The roof of that building was blown onto I-95 near milepost 50. Large hail and high winds were also reported in association with this storm, causing scattered damage throughout the Southeast and Kentucky Valley.

In addition to the damaging winds and tornadoes caused by this storm system, flooding intensified along the Upper Mississippi river valley even as heavy precipitation wound down in the region.

The storm also brought cool Canadian air southward into the nation, and temperatures in the Plains and Appalachians fell well below normal for this time of year. The East Coast saw a mix of temperatures, the Mid-Atlantic experienced cool weather, while the New England interior was quite warm.

Temperatures in the Southwest and California were also pleasantly warm, while a weak trough in the Northwest brought some chilly temperatures and scattered precipitation to the region.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 6 degrees at Rush City, Minn to a midday high of 96 degrees at Okeechobee, Fla.

Tornadoes kill 21 in Missouri and Oklahoma

Dr. Jeff Masters

Damage photos I saw from these towns showed buildings swept clean from their foundations, indicative of at least EF-4 damage, and possibly EF-5. Yesterday's deaths brings the 2008 U.S. tornado death toll up to 96--the most tornado fatalities since 1998, when 130 people died. With at le...
