Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, March 20, 2010.

A major storm will strengthen over the Southern US on Saturday. As a low pressure system continues moving off the Southern and Central Rockies, it will intensify by pulling moisture onshore from the Gulf of Mexico. Due to cold air associated with this system, expect another 2-5 inches of snow in Oklahoma and northern Texas, while near 3 inches are anticipated over the Central Plains. The Southern Rockies may see an inch or so over light snow on Saturday. This system will slowly move eastward and will create a strong front that will extend along most of the Mississippi River. This will bring an end to warm conditions over the Midwest including the Mid- and Upper Mississippi River Valley. Expect highs in the 30s along this cold front with up to 2 inches of new snow in the Midwest. As this front passes, strong winds are anticipated, with gusts up to 25 mph.

Behind this low pressure system, a strong ridge of high pressure will build over the Rocky Mountains. This will allow for highs near 20 to 30 degrees below normal over the Southern and Central Rockies, also under breezy conditions. Further West, the West Coast will see another warm, sunny, and dry day on Saturday with highs in the 70s and 80s in California and in the 60s over the Pacific Northwest.

The East Coast will also see another warm and sunny day with higher pressure over the region. The Northeast and New England will see plenty of sunshine with highs in the 60s, while the Ohio River Valley will see some increasingly cloudy skies and a chance for light showers by evening. In the Southeast, a Red Flag warning remains in effect due to another hot and dry day anticipated.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 7 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a high of 86 degrees at Palm Springs, Calif.

Red River rising: 18th consecutive year of flooding--why?

The Red River at Fargo, North Dakota continues to rise, with a peak expected Sunday at the 4th highest flood level observed in the past century. "Major" flood level is 30 feet, which the river surpassed on Wednesday, and the river is expected to crest near 38 feet on Sunday, just 2.8 feet below the record set last year. On this date in 1948, an F3 tornado moved through Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, destroying 52 aircraft. Attempting to learn a lesson from the tornado, the people in charge of the base ordered forecasters to look into the future to see if a tornado was possible. Another tornado crossed the prepared base on March 25th, causing minimal damage due to accurate forecasting.
