An area of disturbed weather (97L) has developed midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles Islands. Wind shear is a moderate 10-15 knots over the disturbance, and waters are warm, about 29° C. Satellite loops show a large area of heavy thunderstorms that are beginning to look organized, with a little bit of upper-level outflow to the north. Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, October 11, 2008.
A strengthening low pressure system will be located over the Sea of Japan near southeastern Russia will produce extensive cloud cover and precipitation across Japan and southeastern Russia on Saturday. The rainfall will be moderate to heavy in most places, with the inland areas of Russia possibly receiving some light snow. The rain over Japan is only expected to last throughout the morning, while Russia will see wet conditions all day on Saturday, with the precipitation reaching the Kamchatka Peninsula in the evening.
High pressure will help to keep conditions mostly clear on Saturday for northeastern China, Mongolia, and the Korean Peninsula. However, another strengthening low pressure system will approach Mongolia from the west later in the day, although the country will likely not feel the effects of the system until Sunday. Moving to the south, an area of low pressure located near the Philippines is given only slight odds of developing tropical characteristics by Saturday. Regardless of development, the storm will likely produce areas of moderate precipitation across the region throughout the day. Meanwhile, central China down into Southeast Asia can expect scattered showers and storms, while the Middle East will remain hot.
In Australia, a trough will produce clouds and scattered rainfall the eastern portions of Queensland and New South Wales on Saturday. A weaker trough could produce a few clouds across West Australia, while high pressure will keep the rest of the continent mostly clear.
