Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, July 24, 2008.

A low pressure system located to the northeast of Hokkaido will produce a front that will extend across Japan and the Korean Peninsula on Thursday. A line of showers and storms will form along the front, producing heavy rain and possible flooding across the region. Eastern China could also see rain from the system. Additional low pressure will produce clouds and rain over southeast Russia, as well as the far northeastern corner of Russia and the Kamchatka Peninsula. Meanwhile, a cold front associated with a weak low pressure system in central Russia will push across central and eastern Mongolia on Thursday, triggering clouds and scattered light to moderate rainfall across Mongolia and into China. A second front extending from this system will approach Mongolia from the west, and the wet weather could reach the western part of the country by the end of the day. Southeast Asia can expect the wet conditions associated with the monsoon season, while the Middle East will be seasonably dry and hot.

Temperatures across the continent will be in the upper 20s to the mid-30s, with teens in parts of Mongolia, Japan, and northeast China. Western India and the Middle East will see temperatures rise well into the 40s.

A developing low pressure system off of the northeast coast of Australia will produce heavy rain along the coast of Queensland and northeastern New South Wales on Thursday. Meanwhile, a cold front traveling along the southern coast of the continent will bring rain to West Australia. High pressure will keep most of the rest of the continent dry.

Temperatures across the continent will range from the mid-20s in the northern part of Australia down to the lower 10s in Victoria, New South Wales, and parts of Queensland.

Hurricane Dolly smashes ashore

Dr. Jeff Masters

Hurricane Dolly smashed ashore on the South Texas coast on Padre Island early this afternoon, bringing 100 mph winds and a storm surge of 6-8 feet to the coast. The southern edge of the eyewall is now battering Harlingen, where sustained winds of 56 mph, gusting to 74 mph, have been observed. Reports from the Hurricane Hunters show that Dolly's pressure is now rising, and radar imagery out of Brownsville, Texas confirms that the storm is starting to weaken. Visible ...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

On this date in 1788, George Washington's weather records apparently recorded the center of a hurricane passing directly over his Mount Vernon home. The storm passed through North Carolina and Virginia before moving further to the northwest.
