High Wind Watch
Statement as of 7:30 PM AKDT on August 29, 2015

... High wind watch in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday
evening...

The National Weather Service in Juneau has issued a high wind
watch... which is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday
evening.

* Location... southern Panhandle with strongest winds along the
outer coast and channeled terrain susceptible to southeasterly
winds.

* Winds... southwesterly winds 25 mph in the morning becoming
southeasterly and increasing possibly as high as 45 mph with
gusts to 60 mph.

* Timing... increasing rapidly by mid morning... then diminishing
rapidly after frontal passage late Sunday afternoon.

* Impacts... high winds may cause trees and branches to fall onto
roadways... structures... and power lines. High wind may also
pose a threat to small craft underway or at their moorings as
well as aircraft tied down outdoors.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous
high wind event. Sustained winds of at least 40 mph... or gusts of
58 mph or stronger may occur. Continue to monitor the latest
forecasts.

Special Statement
Statement as of 6:00 AM AKDT on August 20, 2015

... Another round of rain and wind late Friday and Saturday...

A potent low pressure system and associated weather front will move
into the Panhandle late Friday and into Saturday. This will bring
another period of moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds to
Southeast Alaska. Total rainfall amounts will range from 1 to 3
inches. Southerly winds will increase Friday night and Saturday
with gusts of 30 to 45 mph over much of the area. Winds are
expected to begin to subside later Saturday and Sunday.

Moderate to heavy rainfall combined with strong winds will result
in an increased risk of mudslides. Area rivers... creeks and streams
will also rise as a result. Antecedent conditions combined with
significant rainfall could result in minor flooding.
