Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 6:28 PM MDT on August 27, 2015

... The Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory remains in effect until
730 PM MDT for north central El Paso County...

At 625 PM MDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rain has move south
and east of the Black Forest burn scar... with a few light to
moderate showers across northeastern Teller County moving southeast
around 20 mph at this time.

Doppler radar estimated between 1/2 and 1 inch of rain has fallen
across the burn scar over the past hour... with a weather spotter
just north of the burn area recording 0.68 inches of rain. This
rainfall will cause small stream flooding in the advisory area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Black Forest.

This includes the following streams and drainages... West Cherry
creek... snipe creek... Kettle Creek... Monument creek... black Squirrel
Creek... Cottonwood Creek... east Cherry Creek... Sand Creek... Burgess
river and Smith Creek.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Just a small amount of rainfall on a burn scar can lead to flash
flooding. Water that is normally absorbed by the soils and
vegetation... runs off almost instantly. This causes creeks and
drainage areas to flood at a much faster rate than normal. In
addition... the soils in a burn scar become unstable when it rains...
sometimes resulting in debris and Falling Rock. Roads can be washed
out by the force of the rushing water and debris.
