Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Friday, May 24, 2013.

Heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms developed over southern Texas and northern Mexico on Friday, as onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico maintained warm and humid conditions. Rainfall totals reached over 2 inches by mid-day for the region. Uvalde, Texas saw a mid-day total of 2.06 inches of rain. Wind gusts up to 50 mph also accompanied this system.

To the north, showers and thunderstorms developed over the Plains as a broad low pressure system moved off the Rockies and into the Plains. This pushed a warm front eastward, which allowed for showers and thunderstorms to pop up from North Dakota through Kansas. These storms have not yet turned severe but there was a slight chance of severe thunderstorm development across northeastern Colorado and into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds were likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front allowed for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Strong winds and heavy rainfall were reported from Pennsylvania through Maine. Out West, a trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest kicked up a few more scattered showers across Washington and Oregon, which moved into Idaho and western Montana.

Areal Flood Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:39 PM EDT on May 24, 2013

The National Weather Service in Burlington has extended the

* Flood Warning for...
northeastern Chittenden County in northwest Vermont
southern Franklin County in northwest Vermont
LaMoille County in northwest Vermont

* until 1245 am EDT

* at 636 PM EDT the LaMoille river near Cambridge... along with many
rural streams across northeastern Chittenden and western LaMoille
County continue to run high from last night's excessive
rainfall. Recent river gage data and coordination with local
emergency management indicate the LaMoille river remains near
flood stage in the Village of Cambridge. Thus high water may
impact State Route 15 at the wrong way bridge with
closures possible. With additional light to moderate rainfall
affecting the warned area through the overnight hours... the
LaMoille river and other small streams will continue to run high.
Thus highways and some local roads may still see additional
flooding.

Locations in the warning include but are not limited to Underhill
and Cambridge.

If you encounter flooding... seek higher ground immediately. When you
can do so safely please report any flooding to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free... 1 800 8 6 3 4 2 7 9... or by submitting
a storm report at weather.Gov/Burlington.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not go on... in... or near rivers and streams. The high water levels
and fast flows can create deadly consequences for persons who venture
too close and become caught in floodwaters by accident... or
intentionally try to swim or boat on flooded waterways. When you put
yourself in harms way the life you risk is not only your own... you
also risk the lives of Rescue personnel.

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
