Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday, May 22, 2013. After a couple of active severe weather days earlier this week, Wednesday experienced a bit of a lull in severe weather, although some areas continued to see strong thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center posted a slight risk of severe weather in the Northeast, warning of potentially strong thunderstorms that were capable of producing heavy rain, strong winds, and large hail. Severe Thunderstorm Watches were even posted from the northern Appalachians through Vermont and Massachusetts. Residents in the Northeast should continue to monitor the progress of severe weather into the evening due to the capability of strong thunderstorms developing into the evening.

In the Southeast, a cold front swept through the area and instigated another round strong thunderstorms that prompted more Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for some areas. The good news was that, by late afternoon, there were no dangerous tornadoes like those that had developed earlier this week.

Meanwhile, a Pacific cold front moved through the Northwest and instigated more rain and some high elevation snow in the area. This precipitation gradually moved inland to Idaho and Montana.

The middle portion of the country remained dry as an active storm swept into the Midwest and produced scattered light to moderate rain.

The Northeast rose into the 70s, while the Southeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

north central Orange County in central Vermont...
south central Orleans County in northeast Vermont...
Washington County in central Vermont...
southeastern Chittenden County in northwest Vermont...
southwestern Essex County in northern Vermont...

* until 745 PM EDT.

* At 640 PM EDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a
severe thunderstorm capable of producing one inch diameter hail and
damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. The storm was near Little River
State Park... moving east at 30 mph.

* Locations in the warning include but are not limited to...
Worcester... Morrisville... Elmore... Calais... Calais... Hardwick...
Walden... Cabot... Danville... West Danville... Passumpsic... St.
Johnsbury...

This severe thunderstorm is also producing deadly cloud to ground
lightning.

cancelled...

The threat of damaging wind and hail has diminished. Therefore the
National Weather Service has cancelled the Severe Thunderstorm
Warning.

However... thunderstorms with small hail... brief gusty wind... heavy
downpours... and deadly lightning remain possible.

Stay away from windows and doors during thunderstorms. Remain in safe

At 625 PM EDT a severe thunderstorm was reported producing one inch
diameter hail... and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. The storm was
near Garfield... moving east at 30 mph.

This severe thunderstorm is also capable of producing deadly cloud to
ground lightning.

At 642 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated that heavy rainfall of 1 to
2 inches fell across Burlington... Colchester... Winooski and Essex.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on
small creeks and streams... and ponding of water in urban areas...
highways... streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage
areas and low lying spots.

Be careful when driving. Ponding water on roadways can create
dangerous driving conditions... and heavy rainfall will reduce
visibility.

Turn around... don't drown. Do not drive into areas where water covers
the Road.
