Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

Wet and unsettled weather continues for parts of the East and South on Tuesday as a cold front dropping southeastward across the Midwest reinforces another frontal boundary extending from the Northeast through the Central Plains. Expect rain and thunderstorm activity along and ahead the advancing cold front in parts of the Ohio Valley into New England, while a cooler airmass behind this cold front leads to cooler daytimes highs in the Upper Great Lakes and Northeast. Areas of isolated to scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop south of the main frontal disturbance from the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast through the Central and Southern Plains. Impulses from from the West will enhance precipitation eastern Oklahoma and northeastern Texas, as well as create the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms in parts of the Central and Southern High Plains. The Storm Prediction Center issued a slight risk of severe thunderstorm development from the late afternoon through the evening. While the main concerns with these storms are isolated areas of hail and damaging wind gusts, a localized tornado threat remains possible.

Meanwhile, thunderstorm will pick up across the High Plains late Monday afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe thunderstorm development for parts of the region. While the main concerns with these storms are hail and damaging wind gusts, conditions may turn favorable for isolated tornadoes by the evening.

Out West, an upper level low located off the Pacific Northwest coast will bring progressively better chances for showers to the region through the mid-week. The low will slowly work its way closer to the coast Tuesday, before moving inland Wednesday.

Record Report
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:55 PM AKDT on June 17, 2013

... Three high temperature records smashed in one day...

Excitement abounded this afternoon across northeastern Prince
William Sound as unusually hot temperatures were felt across
the region. For the past several days... high temperature records
have been tied or broken... but todays temperatures soared beyond
anything previously seen in this area. In Valdez... the daily high
temperature record of 75 degrees set in 1997 was shattered when...
at 45 minutes after 3 PM... the Mercury in our thermometer shot up
to 90 degrees. After a brief dip back into the upper 80s... the
Mercury again registered 90 degrees at 15 minutes before 6 PM.
This also crushed the all-time record high temperature for any day
of the year... and for the month of June... which was 87 degrees and
was achieved twice... on both the 25th and the 26th of June in 1953.
A local weather spotter in town recorded a high temperature of
87 degrees near the hospital during the mid-afternoon hours today
as well. Sun-worshipers were out in force through the mid to late
evening hours... as the temperature at 10 PM was still an astounding
77 degrees.

Along the Richardson Highway... where the D.O.T. Road weather
information systems instruments are located... high records were
also set. Although we only have data as far back as just after
the turn of this century... these values represent the site extremes
since their installations. At 12 mile of the Richardson Highway...
an all-time record high of 90 degrees was achieved at around 10
minutes before 5 PM. On the instruments at 19 mile... an all-time
record high of 93 degrees was reached at 20 minutes past 4 PM.
The sensors at Thompson Pass... located at 25.7 mile... indicated
an all-time record high of 77 degrees at around 25 minutes past
5 PM. These all-time record highs were... of course... daily and
monthly record highs as well.

Public Information Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 10:10 PM AKDT on June 17, 2013

... All time record highs fall at several locations across south
central Alaska...

A expansive ridge of high pressure over southern Alaska is continuing
the string of unusually hot days. Temperatures at many locations were
in the 80s to mid 90s.
