Coastal Flood Advisory now in effect from 8 am to 1 PM EST Thursday... The coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 8 am to 1 PM EST Thursday. A high surf advisory remains in effect from 5 am Thursday to midnight EST Thursday night. Strong southerly winds tonight into Thursday morning will produce a surge of about 1 1/2 feet... which in combination with high astronomical tides associated with the full moon will cause widespread minor coastal flooding around the times of high tide Thursday morning. Water levels on the westernmost portion of Long Island Sound will fall just short of moderate flooding thresholds. Very high surf will also cause further minor to moderate erosion at ocean beaches that have already been battered significantly in previous coastal storms this year. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach erosion. Statement as of 10:47 PM EST on December 02, 2009 ... Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 am EST Thursday... A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 am EST Thursday. As deepening low pressure moves into the St Lawrence Valley tonight... southerly winds will increase. The low will pass west of the area early Thursday morning... which is when the strongest winds will occur. Winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph after midnight tonight... and continue through Thursday morning. The strongest winds are expected over the Twin Forks of Long Island and coastal south eastern Connecticut around sunrise. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds are forecast to be 31 to 39 mph or gusts will range between 46 and 57 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
