Areal Flood Advisory
Statement as of 1:19 PM AKDT on August 28, 2015

... The Flood Advisory remains in effect until 200 PM akdt Saturday
for the chena river upstream of the Moose Creek dam...

Over two inches of rain fell over portions of the chena river basin
since Tuesday. Rainfall has caused the upper chena river to rise
above flood stage. This crest of high water will move downriver
through Sunday morning.

The chena river at the Granite tors campground crested around 5am
this morning at 20.5 feet... which is almost 1 foot above minor flood
stage. The chena river at the Granite tors campground is forecast to
fall below flood stage this evening. The chena river at hunts creek
is expected to crest at 17.0 feet this afternoon... ... which is below
minor flood stage.

The chena river at Fairbanks will remain below flood stage. The US
Army corps of engineers Alaska district anticipates operating the
Moose Creek dam beginning between this evening to Saturday evening
August 29. The Moose Creek dam will be regulating the chena river so
flows do not exceed 12 thousand cubic feet per second in downtown
Fairbanks.

Expected impacts: water may be over the Road at mile 36.9 Chena Hot
Springs Road. There also may be water over the Stiles creek shooting
range and campground... portions of the rosehip campground... compeau
trailhead.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Recreational users should be prepared for a significant increase in
flow which may cause levels to rise out of bank in places. Watch for
an increase in logs and other debris in the river. Additionally... an
increase in the level of groundwater table is expected.

A Flood Advisory means river or stream flows are elevated... or
ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is
imminent. Do not attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find
alternate routes. It takes only a few inches of swiftly flowing
water to carry vehicles away.
