Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, May 18, 2013.

A strong low pressure system will bring active weather to the center of the nation on Saturday. The system will move off the Rockies and into the Plains, which will push a warm front into the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, while it continues pulling a cold front southeastward across the Western states. Counter clockwise flow around this system will pull more moisture and energy into the Plains from the Gulf of Mexico, allowing for showers and thunderstorms to develop from Oklahoma through the Dakotas and into Minnesota. These areas are under a slight threat of severe weather development with strong winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall. Parts of western Nebraska and northwestern Kansas are under a moderate risk of severe thunderstorm development. This area has increased risk for tornado development on Saturday.

East of this activity, a weak trough slowly moves over the Eastern Valleys, allowing for a few more widespread showers and thunderstorms to pop up from the Southern Appalachians through the Mid-Atlantic states. Meanwhile in the West, moisture from the Pacific Ocean will allow for scattered showers with afternoon thunderstorms to persist for the Northern and Central Rockies. Severe storms are not likely in these areas. In the Southwest, gusty winds, warm temperatures, and dry conditions will maintain dangerous fire weather conditions on Saturday.

... Lingering snow causing slick Road conditions...

While the Winter Weather Advisory for snow over the Anchorage bowl
has been cancelled... light snow continues to fall across the area.
Snow accumulation through the morning hours will be minimal but
driving conditions from the Glenn Highway through northeast Anchorage
will remain precarious. Roads along the hillside and higher
elevations of the chugach will also remain at risk for slick
conditions as pavement temperatures remain near freezing. Caution
should be exercised during the morning commute.

...Anchorage Sets A Host Of New Records...

The official climate station for Anchorage (at the National Weather
Service office on Sand Lake road) received 0.3 inches of snow on
Friday may 17. This sets a daily snowfall record barely edging out
the old record of 0.2 inches set in 1989. Very light snow continues
to fall in Anchorage... but to this point in time no new measurable
snow has accumulated at the NWS on Sand Lake Road.

A new daily record for liquid precipitation was also set on Friday.
Rain plus melted snow added up to 1.30 inches which breaks the old
daily record of 0.21 inches set in 1959.

The 0.3 inches of snow received on Friday makes 2012-2013 the
longest snow season since records began in 1917. There were 231
days between the first measurable snowfall (september 29) and the
last measurable snowfall (may 17). This breaks the old record of
230 days set in 1981-1982.

The high temperature only reached 37 degrees on Friday. This sets a
new daily record for lowest maximum temperature on may 17 breaking
the old record of 44 degrees set in 1971. This also makes may 17
the latest date a maximum temperature that low has occurred.
The previous latest occurrence of a high temperature of 37 degrees
was may 4th... observed in the years 1945... 1949... and 2013.
