Special Statement
Statement as of 6:12 AM PDT on May 06, 2015

... Cooler with showers and thunderstorms possible late today through
Friday...

.Impacts...
* chain controls possible over the Sierra passes
* travel delays possible
* thunderstorms with dangerous lightning

.Forecast confidence...
* high for precipitation over the mountains
* low for thunderstorms in the Central Valley

.Timing and strength...
* showers and thunderstorms over the mountains today through Friday.
* Thursday is the brunt of the storm and the best chance for the
valley to experience showers
* snow levels down to around 5500 ft... may be locally lower in
heavy showers

.Weather summary...
An upper level low drops south into northern California tonight into
Thursday. This will bring a chance of showers and
thunderstorms over interior northern California... especially to the
mountains. The low shifts into Southern California on Friday and
showers are expected to decrease over northern California.
Precipitation is somewhat limited with this system, so amounts are
generally expected to be less than half an inch, and will be
variable due to the convective nature of showers. Snow levels will
drop to around 5500 ft Thursday, with locally lower levels possible
in heavier showers. Snow accumulations up to 6 inches are possible
over the Sierra especially south of about U.S 50. A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for this area.

The NWS will continue to provide updates as the situation
develops.
