Severe storms developed over the Southern Plains from northern Texas through northern Oklahoma on Thursday. A trough of low pressure lingered over the region, which pulled moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This allowed for showers and thunderstorms to develop in these areas, some of which turned severe with large hail, damaging winds, and periods of heavy rainfall. A brief tornado was reported near Cedar Hill, Texas. Hail 2.5 inches in diameter was reported near Davis, Oklahoma and 65 mph winds were reported at Newcastle and Dickson, Oklahoma. Rainfall totals varied over 2 inches with this system. Oklahoma City reported a mid-day total of 2.92 inches of rain.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure over the East Coast allowed for a strong cold front to stretch from the Northeast through the Eastern Valleys. Moisture ahead of this front allowed for showers to develop from the Carolinas through Maine, with some areas of thunderstorms. There was a slight chance that these storms would turn severe from Virginia through New Hampshire, but severe storms have not developed.

Meanwhile Out West, a low pressure system mover the Rockies maintained widespread showers across the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Strong winds developed ahead of this system from eastern Montana through western Colorado. Gillette, Wyoming reported maximum winds up to 56 mph.

The National Weather Service in Midland has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for...
south central Brewster County in southwest Texas...

* until 630 PM CDT

* at 527 PM CDT... National Weather Service meteorologists detected a
severe thunderstorm capable of producing Golf Ball size hail... and
damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. This storm was located 19
miles south of Chisos basin... moving northeast at 5 mph.

* The severe thunderstorm will affect the following locations...
southern Brewster County...

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In addition to large hail and damaging winds... deadly cloud to
ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Remember... if you can
hear thunder... you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek
safe shelter now.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 1000 PM CDT Thursday evening
for West Texas. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch also remains in effect
until 1000 PM CDT Thursday evening for southeast New Mexico and
southwestern Texas.

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for...
northwestern Brewster County in southwest Texas...

* until 600 PM CDT

* at 457 PM CDT... National Weather Service meteorologists detected a
line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing quarter size
hail... and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph. These storms were
located along a line extending from 18 miles northeast of Altuda to
Alpine-Casparis Municipal Airport... or along a line extending from
20 miles north of Marathon to alpine... moving southeast at 15 mph.

* Severe thunderstorms will affect the following locations...
alpine...
Altuda...

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Wind damage with this storm may occur well ahead of the rain. Do not
wait for the sound of thunder before taking cover. Seek shelter
immediately inside a sturdy structure away from windows.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 1000 PM CDT
Thursday evening for southeast New Mexico and southwestern Texas.

... Significant weather advisory for strong thunderstorms affecting
south central Brewster County until 600 PM CDT...

A strong thunderstorm was located 17 miles southwest of Boquillas
Canyon at 506 PM CDT... moving north at 10 mph.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In addition to nickel size hail and strong winds to 55 mph... deadly
cloud to ground lightning can be expected. Remember... if you can
hear thunder... you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Seek
safe shelter now.

A Tornado Watch remains in effect until 1000 PM CDT Thursday evening
for West Texas. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch also remains in effect
until 1000 PM CDT Thursday evening for southeast New Mexico and
