Heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms developed over southern Texas and northern Mexico on Friday, as onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico maintained warm and humid conditions. Rainfall totals reached over 2 inches by mid-day for the region. Uvalde, Texas saw a mid-day total of 2.06 inches of rain. Wind gusts up to 50 mph also accompanied this system.

To the north, showers and thunderstorms developed over the Plains as a broad low pressure system moved off the Rockies and into the Plains. This pushed a warm front eastward, which allowed for showers and thunderstorms to pop up from North Dakota through Kansas. These storms have not yet turned severe but there was a slight chance of severe thunderstorm development across northeastern Colorado and into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds were likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front allowed for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Strong winds and heavy rainfall were reported from Pennsylvania through Maine. Out West, a trough of low pressure over the Pacific Northwest kicked up a few more scattered showers across Washington and Oregon, which moved into Idaho and western Montana.

Through early this evening...scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will move northeast at 25 mph across eastern portions of south central Texas. Most of the activity has decreased in intensity over the last few hours...and is expected to decrease further throughout the evening. Through 7 PM...the heaviest rainfall will generally be across areas east of a line from Georgetown to Luling to Yorktown. Light to moderate rain is expected across most areas with new rainfall totals of one quarter to one half of an inch through 7 PM. However...a few locations could experience heavy downpours with rainfall amounts of 2 or more inches.

Flash Flood Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:55 PM CDT on May 24, 2013

... A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 630 PM CDT for east
central Comal... west central Caldwell... Travis... Hays and western
Guadalupe counties...

At 350 PM CDT... National Weather Service meteorologists continued to
detect thunderstorm training across the warned area... which extends
from Austin and western Travis County... southward to near Seguin in
Guadalupe County.

As of 3 PM CDT... 2.71 inches was reported at the New Braunfels
Airport. As of 350 PM... radar estimates suggest that areas between
Mansfield dam and Lost Creek in Travis County... and between Buda
and Uhland in Hays County... may have received as much as 3 inches
of rain since 1 PM.

Road closures have already been reported in parts of the Austin Metro
area... including the low water crossings at Joe Tanner Road... old Bee
Caves Road... and River Hills Road.

Other locations in the warning area include Mansfield dam... Lakeway and
Lago Vista.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Runoff from heavy rain will flood creeks, streams, street
intersections, culverts and underpasses. Low lying places that
normally flood could become death traps. Do not cross any flooded
area. Turn around don't drown.
