A strong ridge of high pressure will aid in providing some of the warmest temperatures of the Summer thus far along the West Coast, while dangerously high heat index values up to 110 degrees will be possible from southern Iowa through northern Louisiana. Residents are urged to take precaution while working outside.

Excessive Heat Warning
Statement as of 3:04 PM CDT on July 28, 2015

... Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 9 PM CDT this
evening...

* short term trends... temperatures were in the mid 90s across the
region Tuesday afternoon... with heat indices between 103 and 109
degrees. Temperatures will cool slowly through the 80s later
this evening.

* Timing and areas affected... an excessive heat warning is now in
effect for far south central Missouri through Wednesday evening.
The heat warning will expire for the rest of southeastern Kansas
and the Missouri Ozarks this evening.

* Temperature... high temperatures in the middle 90s and heat
indices between 100 and 110 degrees can be expected through
sunset across the region. Similar conditions are expected on
Wednesday for far south central Missouri.

* Impacts... the combination of high temperatures and high humidity will
result in an increased potential for heat related illnesses.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures will occur. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous
situation in which heat illnesses are likely.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible... reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work... the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency... call 9 1 1.
