1866 -- 150 years ago: James Glenn recently has opened one of the finest veins of coal on Rock River on a piece of his land. We congratulate him on the discovery.
1891 -- 125 years ago: The final papers in the Rock Island viaduct matter were conveyed yesterday by Fred Hoss to Col. Whittemore at Rock Island Arsenal, and they will be forwarded by him to Washington.
1916 -- 100 years ago: Mayor William McConochie, of Rock Island, will roll the first ball in the opening of the Tri State Bowling tournament at the Island City alleys Saturday evening.
1941 -- 75 years ago: Harold Shorty Almquist, who was all conference quarterback at the University of Minnesota and since 1928 the successful head football coach at Augustana College, will take over the athletic directorship and head coaching duties at Rock Island High School.
1966 -- 50 years ago: The bikini top issue will come up for hearing at 7:30 Tuesday night following action last night to close the Rock Island night club featuring an underwater act. The closing of the Sea Horse lounge, 11th St., Rock Island, came at about 8 last night. Mayor Haymaker, ex-efficio liquor commissioner, said the emergency action was taken in connection with the club operator defiance of regulation circulated to licensed holders last week. He said topless bikini shows have been offered as entertainment fare.
1991 -- 25 years ago: While Ronald Reagan lunched with Margaret Thatcher on Wednesday and attended a Beverly Hills party for his 80th birthday, residents in his home state celebrated without him. Parties honoring Reagan were held in this northern Illinois community, where he was born, and in nearby Dixon, one of his boyhood homes.
