Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday, June 19, 2013. A transitional weather day occurred Wednesday as some areas of the country experienced active weather. The most active weather developed in the Plains as a storm moved through the Rockies and into the western Plains. This feature carried some moisture that produced areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms from the Oklahoma panhandle through Nebraska. Some of these thunderstorms were quite strong and were related to the thunderstorm that produced a tornado at the Denver International Airport Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a front moved along the eastern seaboard and produced areas of scattered showers and even some thunderstorms from Virginia through the Northeast coast. As the front moved off the coast, rain diminished for most areas. The one exception to this was in North Carolina where the front lingered through the afternoon.

Elsewhere, scattered showers developed through the Northwest and Intermountain West as a Summer storm system moved through the area.

A large high pressure system anchored over the Great Lakes provide dry conditions for much of the northern half of the country from the Plains through much of New England.

The Northeast rose into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast saw temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The Southern Plains rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Southwest saw similar temperatures.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until midnight MDT
tonight...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of central Montana and north central Montana...
including the following areas... in central Montana...
Cascade... Fergus and Judith Basin. In north central Montana...
Blaine... Chouteau... eastern Glacier... eastern Pondera...
eastern Teton... hill... Liberty... northern Rocky Mountain
front... southern Rocky Mountain front and Toole.

* Until midnight MDT tonight

* showers and thunderstorms producing brief heavy rainfall will
initially develop over mountains this afternoon will spread
north across the remainder of the watch area late this
afternoon into this evening. Soils are still nearly saturated in
spots... and much of the anticipated rainfall will run
off... possibly causing localized flash flooding.

* Areas east of Interstate 15 are more susceptible than others
to flash flooding with this system. Soils there remain mostly
saturated... and that area will likely receive the greatest
amount of rainfall.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

Toole... Liberty... southwestern hill... northwestern Fergus... Chouteau
and southwestern Blaine counties until 800 PM MDT...

At 720 PM MDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar was tracking
strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 15 miles southeast
of Shelby to 14 miles west of Winifred... and moving north at 40 mph.

Hail up to the size of pennies and wind gusts up to 50 mph are
expected with these storms... along with heavy rain and frequent
dangerous lightning.

Locations near the path of these storms include... Big Sandy...
Chester... Lothair... Joplin... Inverness... Box Elder... Loma... Iliad...
Devon... Galata... Rocky Boy and Rudyard.

These storms may intensify... so be certain to monitor local radio and
TV stations... as well as local cable TV outlets... for additional
information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.
