Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 10:16 PM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 7 am EST
Saturday...

Hazardous weather...

* light to moderate lake effect snow will develop near Lake
Superior tonight between 1 am and 4 am and continue through
   Friday night.

* Winds near Lake Superior will increase out of the northwest on
Friday morning... gusting as high as 45 mph near Lake Superior east
of Marquette. The strongest winds will occur late Friday morning
through Friday evening. This will likely lead to white-out
conditions Friday into Friday night along M-28 east of Marquette.
Away from Lake Superior... patchy blowing snow is expected with
   winds gusting to 25 mph.

* Snow accumulations tonight through Friday night are expected to be
2 to 6 inches over northwest and eastern Marquette County... with
2 inches or less expected south of a line from Champion to
   Ishpeming to Gwinn.

* Wind chill readings will be as low as 25 below zero late
   Friday morning through Friday night.

Impacts...

* blowing and drifting snow will lead to very dangerous travel
conditions late tonight through Friday night. Similar past events
have led to the closure of M-28 between Harvey and Munising. If
you become stranded... you will also have to face bitterly cold
wind chills. Avoid travel along M-28 east of Marquette if
   possible.

* Wind chill values to 25 below zero can lead to frost bite on
exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* a lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous
   or impossible.

* A lake effect Snow Advisory Means Lake effect snow is
forecast that will make travel difficult in some areas. Use
   caution when traveling.
