Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 4:59 AM EST Feb. 12, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 7 am EST
Saturday...

Hazardous weather...

* moderate to heavy lake effect snow will continue today and
   tonight.

* Winds will increase out of the northwest this morning... gusting
as high as 45 mph near Lake Superior. The strongest winds will
occur late this morning through this evening... leading to white-
out conditions today and tonight... especially along M-28.

* Snow accumulations tonight through Friday night are expected to be
6 to 12 inches... greatest from Shot Point to Grand Marais. Lower
amounts of 3 to 7 inches are expected southwest of Trenary to
   Sundell.

* Wind chill readings will be as low as 25 below zero this afternoon
   through tonight.

Impacts...

* blowing and drifting snow will lead to very dangerous travel
conditions today and tonight. Similar past events have led to the
closure of M-28 between Harvey and Munising. If you become
stranded... you will also have to face bitterly cold wind chills.
   Avoid travel if possible.

* Wind chill values to 25 below zero can lead to frost bite on
exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* a lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous or
   impossible.

* Prepare... plan... and stay informed. Visit www.Weather.Gov/MQT
