... November was warm and dry at Indianapolis...
The first half of November was remarkably warm at Indianapolis... largely due to a persistent area of high pressure over the Ohio Valley. High temperatures of ten to twenty degrees above normal were common on many days along with abundant sunshine... including an extended period from the 6th to the 15th where high temperatures were never cooler than 57 degrees. This contributed to November 2009 being the 9th warmest on record with an average temperature of 47.4 degrees... or a little over four degrees above normal.
The warmest day of the month occurred on November 8th with a high temperature of 72 degrees. This followed a high of 70 degrees on the 7th. Interestingly... the two days at or above 70 degrees in November exceeded the number of days at or above 70 degrees in October. This marked only the third time in recorded history that this had occurred... the other years being 1977 and 1987. The maximum temperature in November was also warmer than the maximum temperature that occurred in October. This has only taken place one other time in recorded history... in 1888.
An upper level disturbance moved slowly through the region beginning on the 16th and continuing through the 19th... with temperatures falling back to near normal as clouds and rainfall affected central Indiana. Mild temperatures returned on the 20th and persisted through the 25th with high pressure once again over the region. A cold front moved through the Ohio Valley on the 26th... bringing much colder air and for many locations... the first snowfall of the season as wet snowflakes mixed in with light rain.
Precipitation in November was in Stark contrast to the wet October experienced as the monthly precipitation total of 1.16 inches tied for the 9th driest November on record... and the driest November since 1981. Indianapolis did not see any significant rainfall until the 17th and 18th... when 0.75 inches fell. Additional light precipitation fell on the 25th and 26th and again on the 29th as two cold fronts moved through the area. Despite the dry November... precipitation remains above normal for the year. For the year we now stand 7.44 inches above normal. The year to date total of 45.36 inches is the 19th wettest on record for the period ending November 30th.
The warm dry start to the month allowed many farmers the time they needed to harvest their crops after the wet October.
At the Indianapolis International Airport there were 14 days with fog and 1 day with dense fog.
