Special Statement
Issued: 4:10 AM EST Feb. 8, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Winter returns as snow... wind and cold temperatures combine to
produce hazardous travel conditions this afternoon through
Wednesday...

A strong upper level low will settle southeast over northern
Indiana today and weaken as it moves to the Appalachians Tuesday
night. The upper low... increased moisture and northwest winds off
Lake Michigan will result in widespread snow showers and squalls
across central Indiana beginning this afternoon. The snow showers
will be less numerous by Tuesday night and end across northeastern
parts of central Indiana by late Wednesday. In addition... very
cold air will filter in over the Ohio Valley. Highs by Wednesday
are not likely to rise out of the teens with subzero wind chills
overnight Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and again overnight
Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Snow showers will quickly increase in coverage by midday today.
There is a potential for heavier snow squalls this afternoon
through Tuesday. Scattered snow showers will continue Tuesday
night and Wednesday... gradually ending from southwest to
northeast.

The combination of snow with wind gusts to 25 mph will produce
blowing snow and near whiteout conditions in heavier
squalls... this afternoon through Tuesday. The snow and wind will
create hazardous travel conditions across central Indiana with icy
and snow covered roadways. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are
possible by late Wednesday with the highest amounts near and east
of a Kokomo to Rushville line. Locally higher amounts will occur
where heavier squalls persist.

Motorists should be alert to slick roads and sudden reductions in
the visibility in snow squalls this afternoon through Tuesday.

Stay tuned to NWS Indianapolis for forecast updates as this system
approaches.
