Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 4:59 AM EST Feb. 12, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 7 am EST
Saturday...

Hazardous weather...

* lake effect snow will continue to develop this morning and become
moderate to heavy at times through tonight especially for
   locations east of Harvey.

* Winds near Lake Superior will increase out of the northwest this
morning... gusting as high as 45 mph near Lake Superior east of
Marquette. The strongest winds will occur late this morning into
this evening. This will likely lead to white-out conditions along
M-28 east of Marquette through this evening. Away from Lake
Superior... patchy blowing snow is expected with winds gusting to
   25 mph.

* Additional snow accumulations this morning through tonight are
expected to be between 4 and 7 inches for locations east of a line
from Harvey to Carlshend. The rest of northwest and eastern
Marquette County will see additional accumulations of 2 to 4
inches... with 2 inches or less expected south of a line from
   Champion to Ishpeming to Gwinn.

* Wind chill readings will be as low as 25 below zero late this
   morning through tonight.

Impacts...

* blowing and drifting snow will lead to very dangerous travel
conditions today and tonight. Similar past events have led to the
closure of M-28 between Harvey and Munising. If you become
stranded... you will also have to face bitterly cold wind chills.
Avoid travel along M-28 east of Marquette if possible.

* Wind chill values to 25 below zero can lead to frost bite on
exposed skin in as little as 15 minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

* a lake effect snow warning means significant amounts of lake
effect snow are forecast that will make travel very hazardous or
   impossible.
