Watches & Warnings

Wind Chill Warning, Lake Effect Snow Warning
Issued: 3:46 AM EST Feb. 12, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 10 PM EST
this evening...
... Wind chill warning in effect from 5 am Saturday to 10 am EST
Sunday...

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a wind chill
warning... which is in effect from 5 am Saturday to 10 am EST
Sunday. The wind chill watch is no longer in effect.

* Locations... northern Erie and Genesee counties.

* Timing... the lake effect snow warning is in effect from early
this morning through late this evening. The wind chill warning
is in effect from late tonight through late Sunday morning.

* Accumulations... 5 to 9 inches today and 3 to 5 inches
tonight... leading to storm totals of 8 to 14 inches in the most
persistent lake snows.

* Winds... west 20 to 30 mph.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Temperatures... highs in the lower 20s today. Lows around 5 below
tonight. Highs around zero Saturday. Lows around 10 below
Saturday night.

* Wind chill values... as low as 30 below.

* Impacts... lake effect snow and blowing snow will result in
difficult travel at times with snow covered roads and greatly
reduced visibilities. Expect both the morning and afternoon
commutes to be greatly impacted by falling and blowing
snow... with the worst conditions expected during the evening
commute. In addition... wind chills and temperatures will reach
dangerously cold levels. The frigid conditions could result in
frozen pipes... and will quickly lead to frostbite and
hypothermia if you are not properly dressed.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A wind chill warning is issued when a strong wind will combine
with cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 25 degrees
below zero or colder for several hours. Those planning to venture
outdoors should use common sense and dress warmly.

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
