Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Wednesday, June 19, 2013. A transitional weather day occurred Wednesday as some areas of the country experienced active weather. The most active weather developed in the Plains as a storm moved through the Rockies and into the western Plains. This feature carried some moisture that produced areas of scattered showers and thunderstorms from the Oklahoma panhandle through Nebraska. Some of these thunderstorms were quite strong and were related to the thunderstorm that produced a tornado at the Denver International Airport Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a front moved along the eastern seaboard and produced areas of scattered showers and even some thunderstorms from Virginia through the Northeast coast. As the front moved off the coast, rain diminished for most areas. The one exception to this was in North Carolina where the front lingered through the afternoon.

Elsewhere, scattered showers developed through the Northwest and Intermountain West as a Summer storm system moved through the area.

A large high pressure system anchored over the Great Lakes provide dry conditions for much of the northern half of the country from the Plains through much of New England.

The Northeast rose into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast saw temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The Southern Plains rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Southwest saw similar temperatures.

Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 11:50 AM MDT on June 19, 2013

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 10 PM MDT this
evening for strong wind... very low humidity... a Haines index of
6... and a dry cold frontal passage for fire weather zones 280...
281... 285 and 300...

* affected area... fire weather zones 280... 281... 285 and 300.

* Winds... southwest 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

* Timing... very dry air will likely be in place across southern
portions of the watch area early... spreading north in the
early afternoon to the northern zones. Winds will increase
late in the morning and will frequently gust over 25 mph by
noon. Winds will remain gusty through the day. A sudden wind
shift is expected in the evening as a dry cold front
approaches from the west between 1900 and 2100.

* Relative humidity... as low as 6 percent.

* Temperatures... highs in the upper 80s to low 90s.

* Impacts... critically dry fuels... very low humidity... gusty
southwest wind and a Haines index of 6 may cause any fires
that start to quickly grow out of control.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures can
contribute to extreme fire behavior.
