Beach Hazard Statement
Issued: 2:37 AM EST Feb. 5, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Beach hazards statement in effect from 6 am EST this morning
through this afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a beach
hazards statement for strong north to south flowing longshore
currents... which is in effect from 6 am EST this morning through
this afternoon.

* Hazards... strong south flowing longshore currents.

* Timing... 6 am through 6 PM.

* Location... east central Florida beaches.

* Potential impacts... a longshore current is caused by wind waves
and flows parallel to the coastline. The south flowing longshore
current can push you off a sandbar further south along the
coastline and potentially into deeper water. Longshore currents
also have the capability to push you down the coast and right
into a rip current.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents... longshore currents... rough surf and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution
should be used when in or near the water.
