The National Hurricane Center is watching an area of disturbed weather just east of Florida for development. There is a 60% chance of intensification over the next 2 days and this system could become the first named tropical storm of the year. Many atmospheric models take the system close to the coasts of South Carolina and North Carolina later this week, but will have to wait for more information to be more confident in its track.

Nowcast | as of 11:00 am EDT on May 6, 2015

low pressure centered offshore Martin County lifting northward... At 1100 am...surface observations...satellite and radar imagery showed an area of low pressure centered about 50 miles offshore Martin County...and moving a little bit east of due north. A large area of showers and a few storms and squalls associated with this low was located over the Atlantic...with a few showers occasionally moving onshore Brevard and Volusia counties. To the south...across the Treasure Coast...winds had shifted to the north and northwest... keeping the shower activity offshore. Into this afternoon...the surface low center will move slowly north while remaining offshore the Treasure and space coasts. The best chance for showers and squalls will remain north of Sebastian Inlet...while there is a chance for an afternoon shower or isolated lightning storm to form along the East Coast sea breeze as it develops and slowly pushes inland. Gusty north winds of 15 to 20 mph along the coast will gradually become northwest...with speeds over the interior around 10 to 15 mph. Over the Atlantic...and at the beaches...conditions will remain hazardous throughout the day. Northerly winds of 15 to 25 knots will produce seas of 5 to 7 feet near shore and 7 to 9 feet well offshore. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for the east central Florida waters out to 60 nautical miles. At the beaches. Large breaking waves up to 5 feet will produce rough choppy surf and make it dangerous to enter the water above your knees. Dangerous rip currents will also be present...and minor beach erosion...which has already been reported in a few spots this morning...will be possible.
