Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 4:25 AM EST Feb. 9, 2016 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk in effect through this afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect through this afternoon.

* Timing... this morning through late afternoon.

* Impacts... the rip current threat will be more prevalent around
the time of low tide... between 11 am and 5 PM.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as jetties and
piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol flags and
signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Wind Advisory
Issued: 4:20 AM EST Feb. 9, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Wind Advisory in effect from 11 am this morning to 6 PM EST
this evening...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Wind
Advisory... which is in effect from 11 am this morning to 6 PM EST
this evening.

* Winds... west winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts 35 to 40 mph in the
late morning and afternoon.

* Impacts... the windy conditions will make it difficult for high
profile or light weight vehicles to drive... especially on
bridges and overpasses. Light to moderate weight items... such as
lawn furniture and empty trash cans will be blown around. Small
tree limbs could be snapped and knocked down.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that sustained winds of 25 to 39 mph are
expected. Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially
for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution. Also... boating on
inland waters will be very hazardous.
