Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, May 23, 2013. A strong, large storm will continue making its way through the eastern third of the country on Thursday, producing more, active weather east of the Mississippi Valley. While the active weather is not likely to produce the severe thunderstorms that have greeted the country over the past several days, scattered thunderstorms will be likely, especially in the Southeast. In addition, moderate to occasionally heavy rain will move through the Northeast, followed by cool showers in the Ohio Valley and Upper Midwest.

Meanwhile, some moisture pushing into the Southern Plains could possibly instigate some severe thunderstorms in northern Texas and western Oklahoma. Due to this possibility, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk of severe weather in the area for Thursday. This means residents in the area should prepare as if severe weather will develop, making any necessary preparations to protect life and property.

Also, a seasonably strong low pressure system will linger over the Pacific Northwest today, allowing wet weather to continue in the area. While rain will be the overwhelming precipitation due to this storm, a few snow showers will be possible in the higher elevations of the Cascades.

Additionally, rain will also spread as far east as central Montana.

The Northeast will rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 80s and 90s. The Southern Plains will rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Southwest will see similar temperatures.

News release: South Carolina hurricane awareness week

South Carolina will conduct its annual hurricane awareness week from
may 26 to June 1. This year hurricane weather awareness week is
sponsored by the National Weather Service and the South Carolina
emergency management division. This annual event gives south
carolinians an opportunity to educate themselves or review their
knowledge of weather hazards associated with hurricanes and safety
rules.

Hurricane season begins on June 1st and continues through November
30th. It is important that all residents become familiar with
hurricane safety procedures because hurricanes pose a serious threat
to inland and coastal areas alike. High winds, tornadoes, and flood
producing rains can occur from the immediate coast to hundreds of
miles inland as they did during hurricanes Hugo in 1989 and Frances
in 2004.

It is best to formulate a hurricane safety plan long before a
hurricane actually threatens your community. We will begin
discussing those safety plans, hurricane features, and associated
weather hazards beginning the Monday of our hurricane awareness week.
