Watches & Warnings

Wind Chill Advisory, Winter Storm Warning
Issued: 3:37 PM EST Feb. 8, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 am EST
Tuesday...
... Wind Chill Advisory in effect from 7 PM Tuesday to noon EST
Wednesday above 3500 feet...
... Winter Storm Watch is cancelled...

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued
a Wind Chill Advisory above 3500 feet... which is in effect from
7 PM Tuesday to noon EST Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch has
been cancelled.

* Locations... the southern and central North Carolina mountains
near the Tennessee border.

* Hazards... periods of snow and blowing snow through at least
tonight. Also... roads that become wet this afternoon may freeze
overnight... causing slippery conditions. In addition...
northwest winds combined with temperatures in the single digits
will result in wind chill values of -5 to -15 above 3500 feet
Tuesday night.

* Timing... snow will continue through tonight... with accumulation
occurring most rapidly this evening. However... deep moisture and
strengthening northwest winds will still produce at least light
snow showers at times from Tuesday morning through Wednesday
night. The Winter Storm Warning may be extended past Tuesday
morning... or a new Winter Weather Advisory will be issued before
this time. Wind chill values will fall below -5 degrees Tuesday
evening across the high elevations... and continue through
Wednesday morning.

* Accumulations... snow accumulation of generally 2 to 5 inches... with
the greatest accumulation potential being on western facing
slopes. Areas along the Tennessee border may see up to 6 inches
by Tuesday morning.

* Impacts... snow and snow packed roads will make travel
hazardous... especially across the high elevations near the
Tennessee border. Snow accumulation and strong gusty winds could
result in a few downed trees. Wind chill values of less than -5
degrees will make it dangerous to be outside across the high
elevations Tuesday night.

* Temperatures... falling into the teens by early Tuesday morning.

* Winds... northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Wind chill values... -5 to -15 Tuesday night in elevations above
3500 feet.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight...
food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong winds
will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in
frost bite and lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken.
If you must venture outdoors... make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.
