Watches & Warnings

Coastal Flood Warning
Issued: 4:06 AM EST Feb. 7, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect from 10 am this
morning to 4 PM EST Monday...

* location... areas adjacent to the Pamlico Sound from the vicinity
of Collington Harbor south through Ocracoke. Ocean side
locations north of Cape Hatteras.

* Coastal flooding... significant water level rises of 3 to 5 feet
above normal for sound side locations. For the beaches water
level rises will be 3 to 5 feet above normal in a combination of
storm surge and wave runup... especially from Cape Hatteras
north. There will also be large battering waves resulting in
significant erosion with overwash and inundation expected.

* Timing... late this morning through Monday. Impacts on the ocean
side should peak with the high tide cycle Monday morning.

* Impacts... significant erosion... ocean overwash... and inundation
along the Outer Banks north of Cape Hatteras. Vulnerable
structures in the surf zone could sustain damage from the large
breaking waves. Highway 12 will likely become inundated and
potentially impassable in typically prone locations from both
ocean and sound side flooding. Sound side flooding could also
impact roads and properties adjacent to the Pamlico Sound and
its tidal creeks. Portions of Buxton... Frisco... Hatteras
Village... and Ocracoke Village could see 1 to 3 feet of
inundation above ground in spots.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or
imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert
for rising water... and take appropriate action to protect life
and property.

High Wind Warning
Issued: 4:00 AM EST Feb. 7, 2016 – National Weather Service

... High Wind Warning remains in effect from 9 am this morning to
4 am EST Monday...

* winds... north 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph... highest
across the beaches and downeast.

* Timing... through tonight.

* Impacts... sporadic power outages are possible due to the
saturated soils from recent rainfall making trees more
susceptible to falling. Strong winds will blow around loose
objects and create adverse driving conditions for high profile
vehicles.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected
or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts
of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
