Statement as of 3:51 PM EST on December 08, 2009 ... High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST Wednesday... A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST Wednesday. * Timing: this afternoon through early Wednesday evening. * Winds: south to southeast winds increasing to 20 to 35 mph during the afternoon and evening. Winds will gradually become southwest early Wednesday then west behind a strong cold front. Winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts 50 to 65 expected at the highest elevations. * Impacts: the strongest winds will be at the highest elevations and along the downstream slopes of the ridges across southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph are likely to cause sporadic power outages... fallen trees... minor property damage... and dangerous driving conditions for high profile vehicles. Residents should move unfastened items... such as garbage cans and deck furniture... indoors.
