... Flash Flood Watch in effect through Saturday morning...

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for portions of southwest Virginia and
southeast West Virginia... including the following areas... in
southwest Virginia... Bland... Giles... Smyth... Tazewell and
Wythe. In southeast West Virginia... eastern Greenbrier...
Mercer... Monroe... Summers and western Greenbrier.

* Through Saturday morning

* slow moving showers and storms will be capable of dropping in
excess of 2 inches an hour. This threat will mainly be from this
afternoon til midnight or so.

* The potential for flash flooding will be highest in the
mountainous areas... and in urbanized areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

Those traveling for this Holiday weekend will need to be alert to
weather changes. There will be a great deal of ponding of water on
highways... so use caution while driving.

... A strong thunderstorm will affect
southeastern Tazewell... northeastern Smyth... northwestern Wythe and
southwestern Bland counties...

At 349 PM EDT... Doppler radar indicated bands of slow moving...
moderate to heavy rain. These bands were moving to the northeast at
15 mph. One to one and a half inches has fallen across portions of
western Bland County... and northwest Wythe County... since this
morning. Locally heavy rain will continue through 5 PM before
rainfall intensity decreases.

Locations impacted include...
Bland...
Ceres...
Burkes Garden...
Bastian...
and Hicksville.

Locally heavy rain may cause local creeks and streams to rise
rapidly. Motorists should also be alert for water ponding on
roadways... which may cause automobiles to hydroplane.
