... High wind watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon...
A high wind watch remains in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.
Strong southerly winds of 30 to 50 mph will be found just a few thousand feet above the surface Wednesday morning. While a layer of relatively warm air will likely prevent these strong winds from reaching the surface... there will be the chance that some of these winds may reach down to the higher elevations. The area between the New York state thruway and Lake Erie will also be susceptible to these strong winds as they downslope off the higher terrain.
Winds will subside a bit Wednesday afternoon... then southwest winds will increase to 25 to 40 mph Wednesday evening with gusts to 60 mph possible overnight as the winds become more westerly. These strong west winds will then persist through the day Thursday... with the strongest winds forecast to be over the higher terrain and near Lake Erie.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A high wind watch means that the potential exists for strong damaging winds to develop. These strong winds could bring down trees and power lines as well as cause property damage. If a High Wind Warning is issued... stay inside... and away from windows. Be prepared for trees blocking roadways and power outages. Stay tuned to weather radio or the other radio and TV stations for further details or updates.
